What is Pilates

Pilates is a full mind-body workout that enhances posture, improves balance and flexibility and strengthens the core, as well as those small, stabilizing muscles. Utilizing apparatuses invented by Joseph Pilates such as the Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair, the workout focuses on the 4 S’s: Strength, Stamina, Stability, and Stretch.

Why the Teaser is Synonymous with Pilates

Joseph Pilates called this movement the “Teaser” because it teases all of the core Pilates principles: Breath, Centering, Control, Concentration, Precision, and Flow in asingle movement. The Teaser incorporates all 4 S’s: Strength, Stamina, Stability, and Stretch and can be performed across multiple apparatuses: Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, and Chair. The Teaser demands deep core strength to lift and hold the V-position, hamstring and hip flexor stretch to keep the legs extended, stamina to maintain control, and intense stability to balance on the pelvis.

History of Pilates

Pilates is a system of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates. During World War I, he created exercises to help rehabilitate prisoners of war. The reformer is said to have been inspired by iron beds with coiled mattress springs. In 1926, Joseph Pilates opened his first studio in New York and called his method Contrology, a practice that uses the mind to guide and control the body’s movements.
